While the Khans and Kapoors rule the Bollywood roost, there is one actor who has ensured that he enjoys equal popularity amongst the masses and has held his own. This actor is none other than Akshay Kumar. Now, to add to his already existing fame, rumours are circulating that Akshay is going to play Narendra Modi in a biopic about the Prime Minister’s life.
Of late, biopics have been the genre du jour in Bollywood with everyone from sports stars to film stars to politicians to gangsters being immortalized on screen. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that a biopic on Narendra Modi is finally being planned. What sent Akki’s fans into a tailspin was the rumour that he might be the one to play this formidable politician.
Fans of the ‘Khiladi’ star feel that he is an apt choice, given the spotless image he enjoys. This viewpoint is further endorsed by the chief of the Central Board of Film Certification, Pahlaj Nihalani. According to the filmmaker, “I can’t think of anyone better to play our Prime Minister than Akshay. He has a spotless image of an idealist and visionary. And look at the kind of work he is doing. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Padman are the cinemas of social reform that Guru Dutt and V. Shantaram were associated with.”
This is high praise indeed. However, that isn’t the only reason Nihalani is ready to endorse Akshay. The similarity in the rise of both men is fairly striking. Nihalani says, “Also, Akshay has risen from humble, working class beginnings to become a national star, just like Modiji. We are certainly looking at a strong possibility of Akshay playing Modiji.”
Others in the running for the role are veteran actors Anupam Kher and Paresh Rawal and there is no denying that these two stalwarts would be good choices. However, as per a national daily’s report, a source has said, “But the kind of reach and impact that Akshay Kumar’s presence will have in a story on Modi would be far-reaching and productive.”
However, while rumours are flying about whether the actor would, indeed, play Narendra Modi, his official spokesperson has denied all such reports. The actor has plenty of films coming up including Padman, 2.0, Toilet – Ek Prem Katha, Crack, Gold and even a Karan Johar – Salman Khan production. Whether he decides in favour of the role of Modi or not, this ‘Khiladi’ is certainly going to be a busy bee for the rest of the year.
